Description of Patient Wellness Classes and Services
Unless otherwise noted, these classes are available to anyone in the community dealing with cancer. The majority of classes are held in the Cancer Center’s Multipurpose Room, 540 W. Pueblo Street.
Gentle Yoga for Health and Healing
facilitated by a Certified Yoga Therapist
Mondays 1:30 - 2:30pm Kat Conners-Longo
Wednesdays 3 - 4pm Anne Van de Water
Fridays 11:30am - 12:30pm Cheri Clampett
Yoga, with its gentle stretching and deep breathing, promotes relaxation, release of tension in the body and a quieting of the mind. Sessions include soft background
music, guided imagery, healing touch/massage and a complete flow of meditative and restorative postures. No experience is necessary.
Yoga for Strength and Empowerment
facilitated by a Certified Yoga Therapist

Fridays 10:30 - 11:30am Cheri Clampett
An ideal class for women recovering from breast cancer and/or others weakened by cancer treatment seeking to bring their mind and body into balance. Flexibility postures, deeper stretches and standing poses are incorporated for total body conditioning and improving range of motion.
Laughter Is Good Medicine

Laughter is good medicine… Recent research suggests that when a person can laugh at life, despite circumstances, pain is eased, depression may lift and well-being can be restored. Mindfulness Meditation
facilitated by Mary Ann Evans, PhD, Clinical Pschologist and Elizabeth Giele, LICSW
Tuesdays, 1/23 - 2/13 3-4:30pm
A class that enables one to learn how to navigate his/her inner landscape of fears and anxieties in a more skillful way. Practices of mindful meditation and restorative yoga help participants view illness as an opportunity to transform unproductive behavior patterns and painful mental habits. Despite the events of illness, new possibilities emerge regarding simple pleasures, stress reduction and self acceptance. Pre-registration required, call Elizabeth Giele at 563-5852.
Nutrition Counseling (for more information, click here to go to our Nutrition page)
Nutrition counseling is now available at no charge to
individuals receiving radiation or chemotherapy at the Cancer Center orSansum. Research shows that nutrition can play an important role in helping to make treatments more effective, enhancing recovery and maintaining sense of well-being. Patients seen by the Cancer Center’s dietitian, Stephanie Bélinge, MS, RD, will receive the guidance, support and practical suggestions they need to create an individualized nutrition plan. Painting and Wellness: It’s All About You
with Deborah Breedon
Thursdays, 1/11- 3/15 1 - 4pm
Alice F. Schott Center, Room 5
Taught by an artist and cancer survivor, this class involves exploring one’s creative side for personal growth and expression. Use of acrylic paints and pastels with an emphasis on color will be taught. Pro-jects include painting from nature and in the abstract.

Painting the Pictures of Health
with Rick Stich
Mondays, 1/8 - 3/12 10am - Noon
In this class, individuals explore the power of creativity and its healing benefit for the body, mind and spirit. Sessions include drawing, watercolor, collage and making a mandala or a medicine wheel. Slides are shown to help participants appreciate the works by masters of these various forms of expression.

Words That Heal

This supportive class provides participants the opportunity to use poetry as a tool for self-expression and catalyst to affirm their search for meaning and sense of well-being. A combination of reading and writing poetry is utilized. No writing experience or poetry background necessary. Registration is required. Qi Gong
Tuesdays 11:30am - 12:30pm with Matt Pesendian

This class provides gentle, easy and effective ways to restore the energy, strength and felxibility of the entire body through the ancient Chinese healing arts. Experience this Chinese system of self care using meditation, breathing exercises and gentle movements to reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitatlity and enhance the immune system. Research also suggests that qi gong may help to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions. Open to anyone touched by cancer, family members and caregivers.
Well-Fit Exercise Program
at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club, the Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA in Santa Ynez and the Walnut Pier Health Club in Lompoc
This 10-week program is free to anyone currently dealing with cancer or who has been treated in the last six months and needs a boost getting back in shape. Due to its success, participants need to be sure they can commit to the two classes per week.
