Special Funding Areas
Donors can designate their contribution to support a specific need at the Cancer Center. Some of the areas currently requiring support include:
General Operations: The general operations fund helps ensure that the Cancer Center can maintain all of its programs and services.
Patient Assistance: This fund helps to pay for the cost of treating charity care patients, such as patients with no health insurance or those on fixed incomes. Last year, more than $300,000 in health care services was provided to patients who could not afford the cost of treatment.
Wellness Program: Through the introduction of programs and classes, our Wellness Program provides cancer patients and the community increased availability and coordination of information and services, with the intention of assisting with the healing process, maintaining health and preventing cancer.
Equipment: Both radiation therapy and nuclear medicine require the use of very specialized, sophisticated equipment. Our current efforts are focused on raising funds for a PET/CT system which is the latest proven technology in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Research: Our clinical research department makes the most promising treatments available to local patients. We offer 40 research studies providing access to the most current cancer therapy options as well as prevention studies.
Colon Cancer Early Detection & Prevention Program: The Center has developed a groundbreaking Colon Cancer Early Detection and Prevention Program. Colon cancer kills 57,000 Americans annually, and in our community almost 100 men and women die of this disease each year. We hope to increase the survival rate in our community by increasing awareness and knowledge about colon cancer though public forums, community outreach programs, physicians’ lectures, indigent screening, genetics counseling and nutrition/lifestyle consultations. Few facilities in the country attempt to offer such a program and it is our hope that other organizations and treatment centers may follow our lead.
RAYS: Learning and practicing sun safety can be easy and fun. Santa Barbara’s sunny days create a natural, year-round playground for our kids. On average, children spend a far greater amount of time outside than adults and therefore receive three times more ultraviolet (UV) radiation in a year. Unlike a tan that fades away at the end of the summer, the harmful effects of UV radiation accumulate. A child will receive the majority of his or her lifetime sun exposure by age 18. RAYS - Raising Awareness Yields Sun Safety is a 10-week sun safety awareness project developed for elementary school-aged children, specifically 6 - 9 year olds. The program is designed to increase sun protection awareness, skills and practices amongst children, their parents and summer camp leaders. RAYS also aims to increase environmental support to promote sun safety in organizations that provide outdoor recreation for children. Please click here for more information.
